The Sumo Golf Course opened Oct. 26, 2003, with a new design by
golf pro Gary Player.
Sumo Golf Village broke ground in December
2001 and completed the course nearly three
years later.
The course is a British-style course with
no trees and wide open. The fairways are
rolling with bunkers around the greens.
Surrounding the fairways, there are deeper
bunkers, which is a tradition for links courses.
To accommodate different playing levels,
the course includes five sets of tees, as
opposed to the more familiar pro, men’s and
women’s tees.
The course not only has women’s and men’s,
but also offers tees for seniors, a members
tee, and a pro tee known as Gary’s Tees.
This summer, Sumo Golf Course will sport
a new clubhouse, featuring a full restaurant
and bar.
“We have eight miles of cart path,” Faris
said.
The Sumo Golf Course is open from 7 a.m.
to dusk.
Winter rates are $42 for 18 holes with carts,
twilight rates are $28 after 1 p.m. and $16
for the nine-hole rate.
People buying houses get a packaged rate
to play golf. The prices are subject to change.
For summer rates, call (719) 784-6152.
The golf course is located at 5201 Gary Player
Drive, one mile south of Florence.
Pioneer Day Celebration — The Florence Pioneer Day Dance will be hosted
Sept. 17 at the Florence Elks Lodge.

and craft and food vendors in Pioneer Park
on Pikes Peak Avenue.
Florence Price Pioneer Museum — The museum
opened in the early 1960s in the old Eagles
building at the corner of Pikes Peak Avenue

Two rooms on the main floor house a black-light
room, as well as mining and industrial displays.

Florence a great site for great sights
Florence, known as “A Great Little Town,”
offers small-town living at its best.
Nestled along the Arkansas River, Florence
is part of the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway.
Main Street offers historic buildings and
a variety of shopping experiences. There
also are two motels.
Oil was first discovered in 1881, causing
the first “boom” to the economy and producing
a large oil-refining center.
It was the second oil field discovered in
the U.S. Some of the wells are considered
to be the oldest producing oil wells in the
country.
Coal mining later be-came a chief industry.
The nearby towns of Williams-burg, Rockvale
and Coal Creek grew up as mining communities
and are developing as rural residential areas.
Today’s economy focuses on tourism, ranching,
manufacturing and the nearby federal prison
complex, build in 1989, south of town on
Colo. 67.
Florence is within a few minutes’ driving
distance to numerous outdoor opportunities,
including hiking, fishing, rafting and swimming.
While in town, visit the Price Pioneer Museum,
a bowling alley or one of the antique malls
that draws antiquers from all over the state.
The historic Denver and Rio Grande Railroad
Depot at 100 Railroad St. now houses the
Florence Senior Center and boasts a membership
of more than 150 people.
A massive restoration of the historic Rialto
Theater and 1920s-era stage on West Main
Street has been completed by volunteers.
FACT Downtown, now Florence Merchants, a
branch of Florence Architectural and Cultural
Traditions, originally formed to organize
restoration of the historic Rialto Theater.

with original artwork and a rare hand-cranked
fly tower. They earned the State Honor Preservation
